Mind Your Mind

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2

Over 25 years ago, we were in London for the first time; every time we boarded the subway, we would hear a recording with a heavy British accent say, “Mind the gap!” If you don’t know, this was a warning to watch out for the space between the train car and the platform from which we were boarding. During the entire ride on the subway, these words are repeatedly heard at every stop. Mind, or watch out for the gap!

To “mind” something means to attend to it closely, according to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary. Scripture gives many instructions for us to attend to our thoughts and minds. The Lord is a good Father, He wouldn’t give us commands and instructions to do something we have no control over – that would set us up for failure and we know The Lord would never do that. If The Word tells us to
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” As in Colossians 3:2, we know it can be done; even if we have to pray and ask The Lord to help us obey – we can do it.

To live a productive life of love and overcome the traps the enemy sets for us, we must pre-determine to closely attend to our minds and thoughts. A negative thought that pops into our minds isn’t a sin and can have little effect on us if we capture it quickly and refocus, but when we allow ourselves to relive failures and wallow in negative thoughts, they can become sinful and impact our lives significantly. The Lord desires for you to live a successful life in Him. Setting our minds on things above is a tool in our hands if we will use it. To live successful lives for God, we should mind our minds and attend to every thought closely.
