
“I will remember the deeds of The Lord; Yes, I will [wholeheartedly] remember Your wonders of old. I will meditate on all Your works and thoughtfully consider all Your [great and wonderous] deeds. Your way, O God, is holy [far from sin and guilt]. What God is great like our God.”

If you’re like me, you have memories from earlier years of your life that you would rather not think about, yet they come and go and sometimes stay longer than we would like. Psalm 77 was written during days of hardship and trouble; Asaph has determined to remember the works of The Lord instead of concentrating on the grim circumstances he was in. He meditates on the great and wonderous works and deeds of The Lord, and after remembering, he concludes, “What God is great like our God.” He praises God when things aren’t going well.
There is a misunderstanding regarding our minds and our ability to choose our thoughts. Some think they have no control of negative memories or unpleasant thoughts entering their thinking, but Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” NIV This instruction is to “think about such things”- you have control over your thoughts, you can decide to remember the deeds and works of The Lord, just as God’s servant in Psalm 77:11.
The next time your thoughts are flooded with bad memories or worries, discipline your mind, remember what God has done, and allow your anxiety to turn to praise, then you’ll be saying, “What God is great like our God."
