“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30
I’m sure you’ve heard about the old wooden yokes a farmer would use to enlist two oxen or cows to help when plowing. Jesus chose this particular tool to help us picture a life with Him, in His service; we are expected to work, but we’re going to be working alongside Jesus, and He won’t give us a heavy load, but a light burden. In Matthew 11:29, The Lord tells us He is gentle and humble in heart – our Lord isn’t a hard taskmaster, and goes on to say He wants us to learn from Him and find rest for our souls. The Lord of all wants you to be connected to Him, and for you to let Him teach you not to be anxious or worry as you work for His purposes.
If you find yourself upset, overwhelmed, and burdened, consider focusing on the work we’re called to do for God’s Kingdom rather than on what others expect or think of you. Others may think they know what you should be doing, and some will give you their own plans. Jesus said to join your efforts with His and allow Him to show you how to live a new way, the way of rest and peace.
