“Trust in The Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
The information age has affected Western culture in positive and negative ways. One way that is both positive and negative is how we can have answers to most subjects in just a few seconds – this is negative because it has conditioned us to feel entitled to immediate answers. Technology has changed, but God hasn’t. He has never needed an upgrade or an advancement – He has always been perfect.
When we say “trust,” it usually means “wait.” We are terrible at waiting. If we ask The Lord for something, there are three most common answers: yes, no, and wait. I heard someone say recently that God never answers their prayers. I said, “You mean He hasn’t answered yet.” They had given up on God because the answer wasn’t immediate. While we wait on God, our strength is being restored; we grow, develop, and become better qualified to handle the answer to our prayers when it arrives. Leaning on God rather than on what we understand is active trust, not passivity or laziness. While we wait, God is making our path straight, in other words, taking out the dangerous curves and problems that could derail the answer to your prayer. Submit to God’s way, and you’ll have more than you asked for; rush ahead, and you will get only what you can produce in your own strength.
Culturally, trust and submission are dirty words – if you want an instant debate, mention submission. If you want to hear someone scoff, tell them they need to trust. God’s Word is the product manual for human life, and His Words are our instructions and the flashlight for the path to a productive and joy-filled life.
